Founded in the 1960s, Baina Beach settlement is located in Marmugoa Taluk, a tourist destination in the Indian state of Goa. The settlment is made up of approximately 1,200 huts.
Magic bus, a renowned NGO, has carried out a thorough investigation of the area, which has revealed that many of the community members residing in Baina Beach, including children, are HIV positive.
Alcoholism is also widespread among both men and women, while many are affected by tuberculosis. The young demographic in the area are mostly school dropouts out with no skills or vocational training.
Females are the most affected in the region as they are constantly vulnerable and at risk.
However, through NextLink funding to the Baina Beach community, we have provided weekly mentoring sessions to three hundred children over the span of a year, with sessions focusing on increasing the regularity of school attendance and encouraging children to return school, building healthier habits, increasing knowledge about tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and diarrhea, all while breaking gender stereotypes.
The sessions were delivered by 16 Community Youth Leaders and one Youth Mentor.
